London Bridge

From sadclown on 2/11/2011 3:36:33 PM

Just listened to Bob's (Klondike Waldo's) "London Bridge" and really enjoyed it.  I tend to like songs that start with some interesting, odd, or funny idea and then elaborate on it.  "We Don't Know How They Sounded" is similar in this respect.

By the way, my sense is that posting comments here might be better than attaching them to the individual songs because everyone in this group will be more likely to see them ... which might in turn stimulate more comments and discussion.  Just a thought.

I also think Bob's songs are really good, for much the same reasons as you, Paul. I also agree that this blog is a good place to have a discussion. If Bob is up for a little constructive suggestion, I would suggest that he might want to explore a more rhythmic strumming style of banjo (like frailing, or Seeger style, for instance) that I find often to be more effective song accompaniment than 3 finger picking. Or, alternatively, when fingerpicking for solo song accompaniment, I find 2 fingerpicking provides a stronger rhythmic foundation than 3 fingers.

Thanks, Marc. I composed and recorded that song, well, actually all of them pretty soon after starting on banjo, actually. After teaching instrumental music (Band) for most of my teaching career, I was told that I would be teaching Middle School Chorus and Kindergarten Music Classes the following year (4 years ago), so Molly* and I sort of grew together for mutual protection. As it turned out, the hour with the Wee Fidgets was the high point of my day for about 3 years. When they cut the program down to part time (and I lost my Wee Fidgets), I decided to retire.

Thanks, Paul. Most of my songs sprang from some strange idea inspired by The Wee Fidgets (my Kindergarten kids) or their teachers, though one was inspired by a 6th grader who asked if I could write a song about "3 Dumb Squirrels" Each of the squirrels in the original song , which took about 3 minutes to come up with, met an untimely demise, much to the delight of the middle schoolers. I realized that would never do with the Wee Fidgets, so I re-wrote it as 3 Silly Squirrels, which became an instant hit with the WF.
