I grew up in Denver, CO and witnessed the early 80's punk/hardcore from the front row and in the pit. Even played in a couple groups, one named Acid Pigs, and another Vicious Prick. Many bands from the West coast and East came through our little cow town. Wish I kept those flyers.

JackJack, I'm glad you started this rad group.
I was a kid during the 80's and was a huge fan of the punk rock style with my spiked bangs, colored hair and safety pin sewing technique. Hey, I still dress that way!
I love the Sex Pistols, the Clash, Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, Huggy Bear, Sonic Youth, the Dead Milkmen, Violent Femmes, the Descendents, All, Suicidal Tendencies, Jawbreaker, the Minutemen, Operation Ivy, the Pixies, & Social Distortion, to name a few...
Let's keep that punk spirit alive in the bluegrass banjo world!

I was passing water on a fence behind a music venue called the outhouse outside of Lawrence, KS back in '88 when I looked to my left and there was the singer/guitarist for UK Subs. He was playing that night with his new group. Minor celebrity, but it was still cool to meet him. I was in the army and 20 at the time. Clash, Fugazi, Milkmen, Pixies and the like were more my preference. Nice to see some of us are still alive....

David-The Outhouse? Was that outside of town in a cornfield? We (The Acid Pigs) played in a place like that in 85 or 86. Might be the same venue? We even broke down in Lawrence KS on the way back from NY. Ah, the memories.
Rachel-Wasn't Poison Idea, E13, and The Accused from Portland? I remember a few cool bands from up there, and of course the whole Grunge thing wasn't just a Seattle thing, Portland helped with that influence. There's still a bunch great music coming from up there. Wish I could say the same for where I live now.

hey jackjack, i'm not familiar with those bands and i've only lived in pdx for about 5 years. i've also been out of the punk scene for at least 10 years! but shoot, there is lots of good music coming out of portland. so, not much going on in santa cruz? i'm surprised to hear that.

There's a few bands here in Santa Cruz, but not a unified scene like the old days where bands help promote each other. There's been a few bands that got kinda big (The Expendables, Good Riddance, Devil Makes Three), but it seems they never talk(ed) about the other cool bands here. I know some bands that have been playing together here for 10+ years and never really getting anywhere. No followers or supporters (not much anyway). I could be totally wrong, I don't go out much at all any more to check it all out anymore. I'd love to have someone tell me differently, let me know about what I'm not seeing or hearing about.
Look at me, I'm turning into an old curmudgeon. Just kidding! ;)

It's been years since I've been to see any bands like that. About the only bands my wife and I see anymore are those playing at the coffeehouse a block away from our house of which Flint River is most notable so far - four youngsters playing folk, bluegrass, Irish etc. better than I likely ever will!

I grew up in MD and caught a bunch of shows at the tail end of the 80s in DC. I worked in a recording studio in NoVa and we used to record HR from Bad Brains who I saw a number of times at the old 9:30 club.

I am down in Los Angeles. I have no idea what's going on in "punk rock" anymore. I don't listen to any of the new bands. I still listen to 70's/80's punk from time to time, and it may have saved my life as a teenager, but more than anything I identify with punk rock's raucous DIY mentality. I see a punk as part of a thread that has always existed in American music (and culture), and can be traced through things like jug bands and rockabilly as you look back in history.

JackJack: I went to college in Santa Cruz and am itching for an excuse to move back there. LA has a ton of great stuff, and thriving music scenes, but I would love to live in SC again, or the SF bay area, or PDX, or Seattle. Some day I'll get outta this town.

Started listening to "punk" when I traded my Iron Maiden Live After Death cassette to this kid for Suicidal Tendencies first album in 85. My first show was Ludichrist(more metal than punk) then SNFU from Canada,both in 1987. I lived in Buffalo NY. Actually I've been listening to DEVO since I was like 11 yrs. old!!
Still listen to all kinds of music. Go through phases.
I did actually go to some house/basement shows in Buffalo last summer. First shows like that in MANY years. I had fun being the old guy in the pit. Hell sometimes me and my pal Cliff were the pit! :-)

I grew up on punk and metal, and played bass accordingly. About three years ago, I started playing upright bass, and got into more roots/folk/old-time music, and especially bands that infuse those styles with a punk mentality, like Larry And His Flask, Calamity Cubes, The Harmed Brothers, and stuff like that. The more I got into this music, the more I wanted to learn banjo, so a few days after this past Christmas, I bought my first banjo and started taking lessons (and not too long after bought my second). I'm loving it, and it's coming along pretty well.

My sisters boyfriend took me to an Iggy concert in Ann Arbor when I was in 6th grade. It was all downhill from there. Saw the Clash in 78, the Ramones about 15 times, 999, Pistols reunion, Iggy about 10 or 12 more times...nothing like a good pit.

Joined the Marines in '84 and left rural TX to SoCal for bootcamp and stationed at Camp Pendleton. Listened to Gen X and AC/DC before the move, but was exposed to a whole lot more in SoCal. I got to see the Ramones in concert in Tijuana, rough concert, spent most of it pulling folks out of the pit and loading them in ambulances, good times :). When back in TX, used to go to the Circle A, Club Clearview (back when Deep Ellum was punk and not posh), and concerts at the Bronco Bowl (bowling alley that had a pretty large venue for alternative music) and the auditorium in Deep Ellum (can't remember the name but saw the Circle Jerks there and others) still have most of my old music and still get the chills when I put in Husker Du's Eight Miles High (saw them live, but it was mostly incoherent screaming and stage flopping)
To bobb62, saw Iggy in SoCal with Guadalcanal Diary (Littany is still one of my favorite songs), they opened for Guns and Roses, and Iggy threw all of there monitor amps off of the stage. GnR came on the stage couldn't find there gear and stormed off and didn't play. Gotta love Iggy. Saved us all from the "jungle".
Oh, and I'm learning to play the banjo.

I came of age in the late 90's Christian hardcore scene. I even played drums in a band called Society's Finest in Dallas, TX. It was a super awesome time in my life. I'm pretty much a newbie to the banjo, but I am enthusiastic about it. I think it is awesome there is a forum for hardcore on this website. Maybe I'll recognize someone.

Really funny small world story. I live in Pennsylvania and have listened to punk/ hardcore music since I was 12 or 13 when my brother introduced me to the Butthole Surfers somewhere around 1985. Point of the story, my brother had a band and in the late eighties the singer from his band at the time had friends roll through town while they were on tour. The bands were Limited End and the Acid Pigs. So Jack, you played a show and slept in my barn in Doylestown, PA. Arnold (Kenny?) and someone else got in a fight in the middle of the show while you guys were playing. I have your autograph, and the rest of the guys, on the 7" record sleeve.

Hey David. Yeah, talk about a small world! I totally remember that story, Doylestown, Todd, the fight (caused by too many shots of whiskey before dusk), and the barn. There was about a whole 12 people at that barn show, huh? That is so funny!

well, i still play bass in a punk band, not really sure how it corresponds to my banjo picking, kinda like two ends of the spectrum.
punk has ben most of my life, i grew up listen to sonic youth, black flag, wipers, fugazi, agent orange, Jesus lizard, butt hole suffers, Melvin, flipper you stuff like that, allot of early hard core and under ground 90 stuff.
played in a couple bands no one will know, mr kahn, algebra of need, don't f--- with mother nature, the scat film societie, the thinking machines, and now f--- attack.
I've toured countless times in a van up and down the east coast, over to the Mississippi and down to Texas and back.
some were along the line i got a bit older, didn't want to spend all my free time touring and playing show. instead i wanted to pick banjo.
makes sense to me to be drawn into the old time stuff,
i mean is punk and old time music, real music made by real people
anyway thought i would contribute
