Welcome Portland Pickers!
From rachel.love on 2/5/2011 9:09:58 PM
Hello Portland banjo enthusiasts and welcome to our group!
As we all know there is really nothing better than playing some banjo. However, you might agree that there is some consolation in swapping banjo stories with friends, thinking about playing banjo, or even dreaming about banjo... hell, I even like looking at my banjo! It's also fun to get together with like-minded folks, either in person or on the intertubes, and commune with our banjo nature.
I really hope to create some Portland-focused dialog on this group, stay up-to-date on the latest Bluegrass goings-on, learn a thing or two from the "Purty Goods" and the "Pros" and, eventually, meet all of you someday at a concert, festival, lesson or jam.
Please feel free to invite your banjo-playin' friends who live in the Portland area!
Cheers and Happy Pickin'!

i knew there was a charles schultz snoopy cartoon about getting a banjo when you were a baby. I had never seen it. Finally they reprinted it...i think there are two versions........at birth a child should be given a BANJO and a DOG. what else do we need?

I haven't any friends in Portland. I'm originally from NY and only lived out here since 07.

Thanks for the invite. :) My only concern which is pretty small is that I'm more interested in old time than bluegrass. Is this more about bluegrass specifically?
Thanks!

looking to buy an openback banjo for around 500. Anyone have any suggestions for a place within thirty miles that has a decent selection of banjos to tinker around with. Also, does anybody have any suggestions for ones to buy in my price range?

I always check craigslist for banjos but you could also try Artichoke Music... hopefully someone else has another suggestion.

Artichoke is the best place, Pioneer is second. Try Zeppmusic.com his mail order prices are possibly the best deals you will find, and there are wonderful lessons, clawhammer, on his site. He has been a world of banjo info for me for over 7 years. But try Artichoke to see what the Goodtime Deering banjos cost and sound like.

Nope no instrument and likes BG a little. She tends to like the more country sounding BG.
I've never been to Artichoke.
