I also play the piano, classical guitar and steel string guitar, although mostly by ear. My favorite part about playing the banjo so far is the tactile high of playing it...it's bouncy and fun and just the right amount of challenging. I love that I can play traditional old timey music or I can play classical or basically anything I can think of. Re. clawhammer, I love the rhythm of the drone and how you can go into a meditative sort of state. Very relaxing. I'd love to find other Portlanders (also interested in Old Time and are also beginners or novices) who would be interested in learning and playing/practicing together.
