I am a newly retired professional (medical) who has played music since I was 14 years old. I studied jazz guitar but played in pop groups (there is no money in jazz in Australia!) until I went to Sydney in the 60s, the Vietnam years.
There, in Kings Cross, was an American entrepreneur the infamous Bernie Houghton, who ran entertainment venues for the troops. I played at the Red Garter, (to be heard here:- https://www.banjohangout.org/song/30673.
I never laughed at banjo jokes again after meeting Charlie Lees, Ron Carson and Craig Berry, banjo players and virtuosos extraordinary. Charlie was voted in the top 10 jazz guitarists of the world in a Downbeat poll, 1954, I think.
Ron taught me how to play bass in our breaks. He taught me more about jazz in 30 mins, than I had learnt in all the years before.
Now, I want to relearn the instrument that so impressed me in my youth. I am gradually working my way around this site, would like to get my hemidemisemiquavers up to speed again. There are a couple of banjo players here in Cairns where I live, and a small group of hardcore Dixie jazz musos. The banjo players use Chicago tuning (not that there is anything wrong with that).
So, hello and wish me luck.
