New Pilgrim Morning Star Banjos

From GrahamHawker on 7/25/2015 12:39:25 PM

I see that there's a new range of more expensive Morning Star Banjos. An open back, a long neck open back, a tenor and a resonator.

These look quite interesting although the specs are a bit vague such as "solid maple" rim and no indication of what "new Morning Star tone ring" might mean and I've only seen one store selling them so far.

Paul is playing a capoed long neck version in this rather excellent video:

They can be seen on the JHS page:

I'd love to try the open back. I have three Pilgrim banjos and I'm looking for a more expensive one. I'd like to know who is making these for Pilgrim.

I had the pleasure of endorsing this range of banjos for Paul last month. I've played the whole range and could not fault any model, the open backs have the sweetest white lady tone I've ever heard. I hope to go with Paul to John Hornby Skewes for some video work showing these banjos. I also have ordered the longneck for my folk style playing, it's beautifitl. The finish is spotless and the metalwork chromed to perfection. The great thing about the morning Dtar rang is that every model has the same tone ring tub configuration, it's simply a different neck.

Excuse my spelling, my fingers are too big for my phone!!

Thanks Joe. The pictures suggest the tone ring is a tubaphone type affair. If you discover anything about the rim construction please let us know.

Hi mate, I don't want to say really, as I'm not totally sure myself. Why not ask Paul direct? He is on here and there is a pilgrim banjo page on Facebook. Let me tell you this, the tone of the open back I play was astounding. Bang for buck these banjos are a steal mate.

Hi both. I've had a play on the open backs and heard Paul them several times. They sound great and play beautifully. The tone ring is a Tuba-phone style ring. I'm not entirely sure about the rim, but I think that it is not the usual 3-ply job but somehow formed out of full-thickness timber.
Mine is on order!

Hi guys,
I'm sorry , but having re read my blog on here I see I have something wrong, my spec on the tone ring is not that of a White lady ring!!, the ring is infact similar to a tuba phone ring, but it has been individually designed by Paul himself after many years if research using modern technology to produce the tone he has always dreamt of having himself. I can tell you this, he has achieved that dream, this range of banjos sound stunning, like I say I have wanted a longneck in my collection for a long time, I could never really decide on which one to get. Having played the morning star longneck my mind is made up and my banjo ordered.
Sorry Paul, I don't know where the white lady ring idea came from!!! I must have typed this while holding a large glass of red plonk.....lol
