Great to have a dedicated group, very helpful and thanks for that.

1) I am interested to buy a Pilgrim but would like to know about the shells of the Shady Grove 3 and the Rocky Mountain 1 and 2.

I assume these are all multi-ply shells?

2) I like clawhammer styles but want to venture into 3 finger territory as well.

Which banjo on my shortlist is the most suitable for that and/or should I add the Shady Grove 7 with the white laydie to my list?

I hope I can help. 1)Shady Grove 003 and Rocky Mountain 2 both have Walnut Shell. Rocky Mountain 1 has Mahogany shell. All are multy ply shells 2) Each Pilgrim Banjo has been designed for a specific purpose. The S.G.003 has a classic Old Time sound and the R.M.2 is realy suited to Bluegrass. The Rocky Mountain 1 was specifically designed for players who may not want to specialize or who have not decided on a particular style yet. The Shady Grove 007 is a specialist Clawhammer banjo. My advice based upon you wanting to play both 3fiinger style and clawhammer would be try the Rocky Mountain 1. By adjusting the tension on the tailpiece you can create a warm clawhammer tone or with more tension on tailpiece you can produce a very clear bluegrass sound. see Joemac link. Although I lean towards frailing I like to have my options open, meaning that the Rocky Mountain 1 would be the wise choice. The Shady Grove 7 has its attractions though. Luckily I can get a Pilgrim very easily from a store right here in town, where I can try them as well. It is good te be well informed and I have my mind set on the RM 1. When I am off from work I will get one. Thanks again
