openback juggernaut

From britcarfan on 5/7/2017 8:59:20 PM

I'm thinking of removing the resonator & flange from my late 70s jug . I'm interested in learning to play clawhammer or frailling and it seems most people prefer an openback for this style. It looks to be easy to do , remove the resonator then remove one flange and reinstall J hooks

and do the other side. Is there anything I'm missing?

Yup, it's pretty simple. I recently put my flange plates and resonator back on to play some bluegrass again, but after about a week, I was missing the warmer tone and lighter weight of my Juggernaut as an open back so I switched back.
***I would recommend that you just take BOTH flange plates off at the same time because I found it harder to keep the head tension even as I was tightening it up when I did one flange plate at a time. I also suggest using a drum dial when tensioning the head. Lastly, my current favorite head is the Reanaissance head for both look feel and tone. Good luck and please post photos of your transformation!
