Hi All,

Since I was just listening to it during my workout a few minutes ago, I thought I would mention Ivan Rosenberg's recording Clawhammer and Dobro as a really nice example of some modern clawhammer music. Highly recommended! Ivan is a BHO member, but I don't think he visits here very often. His Farewell Trion recording with Chris Coole is really good, too.

	ramjo says: 2/17/2011 6:10:08 AM I really admire Ivan's virtuosity (if I could only play ONE instrument HALF as well!) and think he's composed some really likable music. I think his talent as an arranger really shines in the ensemble pieces he has on his recordings. His banjo playing has great tone and drive, in my ears. Can you point to any unique characteristics of his banjo approach that draw you to him?
	ScottK says: 2/17/2011 2:29:00 PM I'm drawn to Ivan's music more than his banjo playing per se. I used to listen to a lot of David Grisman and similar stuff and more recently a lot of the projects Edgar Meyer has been involved in including Skip, Hop & Wobble with Russ Barneberg and Jerry Douglas. Ivan's music fits right in that vein and he does it very well, both composing and playing. In that context, he does a great job fitting his clawhammer playing to the music vs the other way around. He may or may not use the fifth string, may or may not use double thumbing, makes liberal use of syncopation and brush skips so that the clawhammer along with the dobro and mandolin support the composition at hand. It doesn't sound like dobro music or banjo music, it sounds like music. -Scott
