I think anyone has to consider the Horseflies as real envelope-pushers for "music played on acoustic instruments plugged into stuff." Their amalgamation of musics from around the world, and their open, interactive jam ways of setting it are truly unique. Especially when you think of how early this was. Like 1980? Who ever saw a kid in his 20s playing clawhammer banjo in 1980, let alone playing trance music on it? It's even more interesting to me to know that Richie was a real devotee of the old guys--the mountain fiddle and banjo players--and he sought them out to steep himself in their playing--to play with them and to play like them. He is a great example of a musician standing with feet firmly planted in multiple worlds, synthesizing, and producing engaging results.
