model 6510 Ode from 1980

From Bari on 3/22/2014 6:45:03 PM

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I've got an Ode banjo with aluminum rim that's stamped Boulder, Co. Does anyone know if the rims being used in 1980 were still stamped with Boulder, Co. I was under the impression that production had moved to Arkansas by then. The model/serial number are handwritten on a paper label that is currently taped inside the resonator. I traded a Kentucky mandolin for this banjo about 15 years ago. The previous owner didn't like the weight or longer scale of the banjo but it suits me just fine.

Thanks for any input/insight on this banjo - Bari

Hi Bari --

When Baldwin bought ODE in 1966, they continued to build banjos at the
Former ODE shop until the Spring of 1968. At that point they shipped most of the contents of THe former ODE shop to Arkansas (Though they did sell-off some of the older "ODE"-labeled parts.

The "diecast" aluminum rims were still being cast using the ORIGINAL ODE tooling. They didn't bother to eliminate the molded-in "Boulder ODE Colorado" lettering -- or the words:"Model" and "Grade".

Everything you describe about your Baldwin sounds completely correct for that last year of production.
