My Nechville Experience

From foxontherun on 9/10/2015 6:42:45 PM

My Nechville experience started in October 2003.  Until that date, I had played a Japanese made Sigma 5-string (a good banjo that I still have) and a Gibson ESS.  I was looking for a banjo that would give me deeper tone, great playability and ease of setup, which pointed me in Tom's direction.

From my initial call to Tom in October 2003 and through our subsequent discussions regarding the build of a custom Nechville Classic banjo, I was very comfortable with the entire process.  In December 2003, I met Tom for the first time at his shop in Bloomington, MN, and took possession of my walnut Classic.  I was immediately impressed with the banjo's tone, looks and playability and Tom took the time to go over the instrument with me and the innovative features specific to a Nechville heli-mount banjo.  We picked a couple of tunes and I left his shop a very happy camper.

Fast forward to 2015 when I started shopping for a new Nechville banjo.  Although I was very happy with the walnut Classic, I was looking for additional features in a banjo, which led me to another custom build.

In January 2015, I spoke with Brett at Nechville regarding my shopping list of features and I ordered a Nechville Phantom Classic Deluxe Custom.  Here's a shout out to Brett as he was very helpful and he provided excellent customer service.  He was always very quick to respond to my emails regarding the build and he kept me informed along the way.

In June 2015, I travelled to the Nechville shop in Bloomington and took possession of the banjo.  I met Brett, Jeremiah and Nathan for the first time and I was very impressed with these three gentlemen and the fine banjo they built for me.  Nathan did the neck work (hand shaping, frets, etc.) and the comfort and playability of the neck is great.  Jeremiah played a large role in the build and completed all the setup work on the banjo.  Jeremiah also provided great customer service and the pride in his work was clearly evident.

In August 2015, I returned to the Nechville shop after the banjo had a couple of months to settle in and I was looking to have some tweaking and set up work done.  I went through the banjo with Jeremiah and he called Tom in on his day off to ensure that they did everything possible to get the banjo where I wanted it to be.  As it worked out, Tom, Jeremiah and I ended up spending most of the day together trying out numerous combinations of things (light/heavier bridge, taller/shorter bridge, neck heights to suit the different bridges, truss rod and tail piece adjustments, numerous head tensions, etc.) to get the banjo where I wanted it to be.  I was able to learn a lot about these two gentlemen (personally and professionally), their passion for banjos and their ultimate desire to have every Nechville owner completely satisfied with their banjo.  Once again, I was a very happy camper.

As a bonus, David Thompson (banjo player with Monroe Crossing) stopped by in the afternoon to pick up his banjo that Jeremiah had set up for him.  He picked a number of tunes (man, can he play) and then we had a small jam session.  To be clear, David, Tom and Jeremiah were the primary players and I did some vamping and a break to I Saw the Light.  (My journey as a student/technican continues).  Tom and Jeremiah also know how to really light it up on the five-string and guitar.  That was an awesome end to the day.

In summary, my experience with Nechville banjos has been second to none.  They build a fantastic product and they are 100% good people who truly care about their customers.  I've been a happy Nechville owner for 12+ years and that will continue for many years to come.  Kudos to Tom and his team!

Thanks for sharing your experience. It is always good to hear about positive experiences with all the poor customer service these days.

Where else you going to get customer service like that??? Not to mention the quality and beautiful, innovative designs...

Thanks! I had a similar experience and have ended up in having two excellent Nechville in my possession. I only hope that I could pay a visit to their shop... but Montreal is a bit far! I'm assuming that my wife is happy we live far away...!

I agree that Tom and crew are super great builders and good people. Tom has always been responsive to all of my questions and needs. And the result is that I have a fine instrument in a Nechville Classic with a great two part pickup.

I am happy to hear all of the positive posts. I ordered a Nechville Athena in July, and expect to be receiving it soon. I am a beginner, and I know the Athena is much more banjo than I am a picker. Hopefully, some day, I will play some where near the banjo's capabilities.
