Wagon Wheel

From pickn5 on 2/17/2015 6:42:17 AM

Since April 2014, I have been following Murphy's Beginning Banjo Track. I'm currently working on building accuracy and speed on Foggy Mountain Breakdown and continue to improve the other tunes learned. A couple of weeks ago, I went to a free concert at the local library where a local band  Old Clay Stone was playing. One of the songs they played was Wagon Wheel which I really like and thought I would try and learn it. While gathering anything I could find on the tune, BHO came up with it for the BG TOTW. I had already gathered the lyrics, chords and listened to YouTube videos getting the tune in my head. Yesterday I purchased Casey's lesson from here on Banjo Hangout and downloaded it. Just taking a little side trip from the track. Will be back on track when I have Wagon Wheel learned. I've really got to work on singing along, which is difficult for me as I can't carry a tune in a bucket.

I hope that you are just vamping the chords when you try to sing and play at the same time. That will be much easier than trying to play the break and singing. The more you do it the easier it gets. If it still seems too hard, record yourself vamping the chords and sing along with that then just go back and forth. That way you can focus on one thing until it becomes second nature. That makes it easier to do two things at once. Generally it's the playing that gets to be second nature for me first. Good luck and have fun!

PS-When I m trying to remember a song I put it on my phone or burn it on a CD and sing along with it when I drive or listen to it on earbuds when I walk my dogs.

Doug, thanks for the great suggestions. I just started the lesson yesterday the 17th starting with the backup. Casey teaches the backup using a square roll. Once I get that down, I'll work on the vamping and singing or the lead break. Eventually I hope to have the whole thing learned.
