The Absolute Best System Ever!

From Randyc1959 on 3/11/2011 10:30:23 PM

I started playing back in the mid 80's.  Back then The Murphy Method was new and the only thing available was audio cassettes.  I went through each and every one and today can still play every song she taught.  I would have given up long ago if I wouldn't have had this awesome method to learn with.  Of course 25 years later I've become quite a picker but I feel like I owe 90% of it to Murphy Henry.

You are so fortunate to have started 25 years ago. I wish I had started then. One question for you, how have you picked up speed in your playing? I am a devoted MM student, and can play many of the songs she has taught, but, I am still slow. I play a lot at jams, and when I try to play a non-singing song, such as " The Old Spinning Wheel", I start it out at the tempo which is comfortable for me. When the song goes around the circle and comes back to me, the group has sped up the song so much that I can not finish it up. I do not crash completely, (I know the chord progression, so I just play rolls to finish out the song), but I can not play the origional arrangement at the new faster tempo. How do you get your speed up so that you can play at a good jam speed. I have the same problem with a lot of my other songs... Any advice from the point of view of an experienced picker who learned from Murphy???

3 words...Practice, Practice, Practice, It just takes time. Don't try to rush, just let it come natural and it will. It's easy to get frustrated and even after 25 years I'll just leave my banjo alone for 2 or 3 days sometimes and it always gives me a fresh and determined attitude again.
