Novice question

From mccraee on 9/4/2017 10:03:14 AM

I guess I'm not even a beginner.  I'm working on my first piece "banjo in the hallow".  Getting so good that I played for my husband. He is pretty good on guitar but doesn't know banjo.  His comment was that I shouldn't be watching my right picking hand all the time.  I do really focus on that except one little part where I repeatedly miss a left hand fingering.  Thoughts ?

I think its ok especially since its your first song. Before you know it you will be able to play that song blindfolded. There are so many other areas that are much more important IMO. Hand and banjo position (making sure strap is a good fit) and getting the timing right, double thumbing etc. I think it is ok, i always find myself looking at my fretting hand and my picking hand every so often during a song. Repetiton is key, keep playing that song until you are sick of hearing it and then keep going. I still play Banjo in the Hollow at least once a day as part of my practice routine before i start working on a difficult section, since you are moving up and down the neck the whole time. This may be too early in your banjo learning to suggest this but, practice playing while standing up once you get the song down.If you can play it standing up whle walking around the hosue your golden. The cool thing about Murphy is that each song is a building block to another and then it keeps going (as you prob know), if i get burned out trying to learn a new song, ill go to the jam dvd and work on vamping and stuff. I have 10 of her lesson dvds now so at least you are on the right path to awesomeness!

Ha ha. Just tried walking around and it's like starting over. My neighbors are going to be so happy when it cools off enough that I close the windows so they don't have to hear banjo in the hallow anymore

Don't worry where you're looking. Looking at right hand, left hand, or no hands is fine!
