My middle name is Craig, so I like you right off the bat! Is Coolville really a city in OH, or is that just your state of mind? :-) Whichever, we're glad you're here. Tell us a little about your banjo multi tasking!

Hi Everyone. Yes Coolville is a real town LOL a lot of people ask that. Its actually about 5 miles down the Hocking river from Frost Ohio. Most of the residents live outside of town as I do, in town population probably numbers around 400 give or take.
I'v always enjoyed oldtime and clawhammer style andmy wife who is a fiddle player has been getting more and more into oldtime. I'v played Scruggs style for over 15 years and play guitar, mandolin, and bass as well. I have started learning clawhammer after having a oppertunity I could not turn down.
My wife and I both joined the BG Gospel group "Jarvis Road" this winter, me on banjo and her on vocals and 2nd fiddle.
Everett Jarvis is the primary fiddle player but after having a stroke and at age 82 he is "training" my wife to take over for him. He plays A LOT of old time tunes and we got to talking about old time and found out that Ward Jarvis was his father. He has offered to teach us both a lot of his dads tunes and others as well aside from our normal playing in the Gospel group. His father Ward Jarvis is a fairly well known old time fiddler and was also a banjo player who played in the clawhammer style. Everett focused on fiddle though and does not play clawhammer like Ward but does play a form of 2 finger. So the opportunity to learn from this man is just something that we cant pass up. I also feel kind of a cultural responsibility to do this being from Appalachia and having a long Appalachian family history as well I want to help further this tradition and be able to help pass this on.
So wish me luck as I struggle to learn a new style as well as the new tunes and once we start getting some of them down I'll figure out a way to start posting some sound files or videos. I'd like to eventually be able to offer some type of free lessons on some of the tunes.

Craig, it sounds like you and your wife have an incredible opportunity before you to learn from a seasoned pro and to expand your own skills. Very cool. I'm sure you'll take full advantage of Mr. Jarvis' offer to pass his knowledge along. Keep us posted on your progress!
