For the past couple of weeks, I haven't made much headway trying to get a joyful noise out of my fretless mountain banjo. Well, out of nowhere, I just started playing the darn thing today. I'm not ready to go on tour yet, but I was able to play it in a halfway decent manner, both picking and chords. I could even get the chords in the middle of the neck. In fact, the three inches or so up near the head nut don't really work very well. There must be a problem with how high the strings are or something, but I can play generally in tune in the middle 50% of the neck, but not so much so up near the head nut. It's a start, anyway.

	chip arnold says: 3/11/2014 3:08:05 PM That's why lots of fretless players have frets at the north end. It's also why most fretless players don't venture much past the 7th fret! Congratulations on your playing.
	C Nyal de Kaye says: 3/11/2014 3:11:27 PM Thanks for telling us your good news. Are the string grooves in the nut deep enough? If not the strings would be high near the nut, but would be more free down the neck a bit. That is what you seem to be describing. Setting up a banjo takes a bit of time and it seems that you are under way. All the best.
