head tensioning

From fouke on 2/7/2014 6:43:17 AM

I am about to build my first mountain banjo, but I am perplexed by the many ways of tensioning the head. I am tempted to do it with a wooden hoop, but I don't know how this stacks up against other systems. I intend to use a skin head mounted on a flesh hoop.

Can anyone give me advice on the best way to tension the head?

Thanks for any help.

There are some wonderful designs with very clear diagrams at bluestemstrings.com

I tack and glue my heads to the underside of the top piece and use a section of PVC pipe coupling as a tension hoop. I pre-drill 45 holes for the tacks.
