Hi All. Santa (a.k.a. my wife) was especially kind this year and bought me the R. K. Smith mountain banjo that Ederly had listed a few weeks ago. I tried contacting Mr. Smith, but he seems to be at least temporarily out of the banjo building business. While he sold these originally with monofilament strings, this banjo came equipped with what looks like Nylgut strings that I have currently tuned to open-G. Is there any problem with this tuning in terms of neck stability? The neck seems at least as robust as what my Goodtime had on it, and when I hear these banjos played on-line, they seem to be tuned up to similar pitches. Thanks.

	tucsonsean says: 1/27/2017 9:31:39 PM No problem I know of with Nylgut or nylon strings tuned to pitch. Steel strings might be a different matter in that these banjos rarely have a reinforced neck. And somewhat, it would depend on the wood the neck is made of vis-a-vis steel strings. (I think they sound best with Nylgut, anyway.)
	Parker135 says: 1/28/2017 8:30:15 AM By now, I've settled on approximately open F tuning anyway. It seemed mechanically fine at G, but I think it sounds better, less harsh, tuned a little lower. While I'd like to hear one with steel strings, I'm quite happy with the way this one plays. Thanks.
