Tony - yes on those vets day songs, none more deserving and a lot of tune choices...
All - On another tack, I've just finished rehabbing a Harmony long-neck banjo for use as a player. To whit: neck and hoop were already stable and straight, as these apparently well-engineered cheap banjos always are, even 60 years after being built, and this one's tackboard case still in good condition (rare to find a useable case for these harmony long-necks).
Re-equipped now with straight geared tuners from the orient, all five. New 10-7/8 Remo head as available still from Elderly. Strap lug installed where an old eye hook was on the neck (equalizing the weight and balance on a long neck). Simple but solid "No Knot" tailpiece replaces original gimpy stamped tailpiece. 30 newer hooks/nuts, flat-sided (eBay snag) replace rusty original set.
Removed all flaking chrome off of hoop (after soaking in Coca Cola) and cleaned all frets (which did not require leveling). Spray painted worn areas and filled (prior) tuner screw hole spots.
Plays and sounds quite good, not incredibly far off from a Vega Folklore long neck (though a blindfold test would be needed to verify that).
I was planning to sell it now, thinking that any other long neck available (except another old yet un-improved Kay or Harmony) runs over $600. What do you fellas (gals?) think my long-neck Harmony is worth?
