Same long neck...new knee

From john bange on 5/22/2016 9:57:03 AM

Beginning 2nd week with total knee replacement...all June gigs postponed. I sit here with my leg up and iced and play and play. The only break my wife gets is some guitar work.

Got mine done last year. Do the re-hab and all will be well. I learned 23 new tunes while I was down. Hard to concentrate while on pain melds. Good Luck!

John,
Got one done last week of January last year and second one done last week of April last year. Got better and better through rehab. By December felt so good I bought a new car. January 12, 2016 got out of car and could not stand weight on 1st replacement knee. Instant change! Got worse and called surgeon for appointment. He put me directly in hospital and I was operated on the next morning. Infection! Complicated by my Xarelto prescription! Wouldn't stop bleeding! IV antibiotics while lab analyzed fluids. Discharged with portable antibiotics and direct line from shoulder to chest. IV units every 12 hours. Still bleeding profusely after three days home health care. Quit Xarelto and made everybody mad! Stopped bleeding three days later. IV continued through March 19th. Second surgery to clean out infection worse recovery and done without rehab help. IV insert made me feel uneasy about exercise and could not even play music! In the midst of April recovery I had MOHS surgery to forehead for squamous cell carcinoma. Felt like getting hit with baseball bat and finally looked as bad as I felt!
May you not have any issues, my friend. I was just getting happy with new knees when infection hit. Looking back, a reddish coloration on infected knee was there earlier than pain. Could have gone in a month earlier. Healing seems slower with second incision through same scar. Getting up from seated position requires the most work. Very careful stepping off curbs!
Watch for color and temp change! Get a proper height arm-less chair for music and do not use long neck banjo as a cane! Banjo stand makes great cane stand while playing. Arm-less chair is harder to rise from, unfortunately!
Careful when turning around. New knees less able than originals.
My infectious disease doctor says my infection probably initiated during original sugery. May you have none!
Best luck in recovery.

Thanks everyone. Risk of infection has been drilled into me too and I'm being careful.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems everyone. I'm glad to hear that mostly we keep on picking. In 2013, I had a 5 week hospital stay for a blocked intestine due to an infection. I was on IV nutrition and antibiotics for most of that time. I asked my wife to bring my old lightweight Kay to my room. I made up a tune, which you can see here on BHO: "Banjo in the Hospital." One version of the song was videoed in the hospital with me in bed, and NG tube, oxygen tube, and IV in right wrist. Another tube draining the infected spot in my intestine is not visible.

Getting over full right shoulder replacement, second joint replacement. Have not been able to play since March 21 since reaching around to play puts the shoulder in painful position. Been lucky about infection, had a long chat with the doc about it and checked him out for any infections. He is very concious about them.
Good luck

Now, how's it going two months later? Very Best wishes warrior, I got mine in 2008, no clicks, no pain.
I've been that busy for the last six months,
Now you guys read up on colloidal silver, I make my own, I lucked out to find a SONY DC power supply. Silver wire, distilled water, fleck of vitamin C, voltage and filter with a coffee filter.
Stopped my brother from overbleeding on Warfarin when my dog nicked him with her paw. Nothing does that but silver. I give it to my animals.

Play on.

Treated myself to a 64 Vega folklore that looks like it was made yesterday...

Don't forget that you will need pre-medication for any dental work. Usually massive hit of some sort of anti-biotic pills a couple of hours before dental work. This includes cleaning.
