Tuning ordinal convention and Open E vs G

From coalandice on 10/15/2015 9:46:55 AM

Just to confirm
When a tuning lists the pitches of the strings,
the order in which the strings are listed
as in Open E tuning EBEG#B would be
5th 4th 3rd 2nd 1st, with the 5th being
the short string and the 1st being the string
farthest from the sternum of a right handed
banjoist.  Correct?  Some folks list the fifth
string in lower case, with the rest in upper case
so as to distinguish it?

Additionally, if song tab is in G tuning
(GDGBD) can one use the same frets/fingering
in E tuning?  I.e. not use the  capotasto on the
third fret?

"Just to confirm" - correct
"Additionally" - correct for 4th through 1st. When you are not using a capo, you'll have to retune the 5th string.
