My next project

From David Moore on 4/22/2015 8:13:56 AM

I just purchased a neck from Paul at the Folk Shop.  Great people by the way.  And I have a rim on the way so I get to practice some of my rusty woodworking skills.  Will post more as time goes by.

Today I cut the square hole in the rim to fit the mahogany dowel stick. I decided to use a dowel stick instead of CO rods. Friend of mine had a nice piece of mahogany scrap and he turned the end to fit my neck. The rim is cherry block built I got from Zach Hoyt, a nice rim he turned with a wood tone rim. I am going to use Rickard unfinished brass hardware on the pot and the tuners. It will look a lot like my Doc's banjos except for the neck.

The banjo is all assembled with my first experiences inlaying MOP. Zach's rim with woody tone ring became a wonderful sounding pot. The hardware is Rickard's 18 notch tension with his clamps etc and a Brooks Masden tailpiece. All of it 'antiqued' and very nice looking. The rim is cherry with a nice variety of color blocks and I didn't use any stain just wipe on poly. The neck was laminated with primarily mahogany and a rosewood FB. I bought some 1/8 cherry and capped the peg head and the heel. The heel has a tenor clef inlay and the PH has a multi piece mum flower. The use of the cherry pieces on the neck tied in the cherry pot so the different woods blend together and I had a concern at first about using mahogany and cherry beside each other. The problem is with the neck. It was an older neck and while not worn wasn't the best built one. The laminations were not true down the neck and drifted off some. The hole drilled for the dowel stick wasn't straight and I didn't notice that but I was able to true the stick with time and pressure. The issue is the angle of the heel is way way more than 3degrees and I have a very low action even with a 3/4 inch bridge. I have a thin shim in the heel but it isn't enough really. Since I have a dowel stick glued in it might be quite difficult reshaping the neck to take some of the angle out. Comments? I may post also over on the builders forum to get some ideas.
