nylon harp strings

From john bange on 9/21/2014 2:08:22 PM

I have changed both my long neck banjos to harp strings. .025,.040,.036,.032,.025 diameters. They break in over night. They are heavier than my fishing line and are way, way less floppy. The banjos are loud and bright and fret, soft as butter. Robinson ' s Harp Shop in Laguna Hills is where I get them.

Thanks, John, I never liked the idea of the one wound string with the other nylons lasting so long. Don't have a clue how often harp players change strings. One of my 000 guitars has nylons and it is enjoyably different and they do last. I'll try them on one of my long necks.

I always wanted to try nylon! A nice older guy years ago sent me info but I'll take your advice and try the gauges mentioned above... any other hints for LN Nylon appreciated!

the nut width can be too narrow on a few makes. Your GT is fine. I like the gauges I mention because they don't feel too floppy.
The only banjo set I ever found that had long enough strings was the LaBella and they were too floppy.
The fishing line has the diameter but they don't settle down for about a week. The harp strings are playable in a few hours and are almost free of stretching over night. I'm real happy with them.

I should probably just shut up about this...the answer to the question nobody asked but...these harp strings change everything.
In addition to being louder, they feel like the same tension as a 22 fret banjo strung with nylgut. I am able to change back and forth between my Vega and a standard Reiter.
The string tension feels the same as the Aquila mediums on the 22 fret.
The added volume is very noticable.
Don't know if this helps anyone but, I'm sure pleased.

I was going to ask how they compared with the
Aquila Minstrel set, but I guess you've answered the question. Thanks - I'm going to try them!

The strings came very quickly and are low cost. They don't stretch as much as the Aquila Minstrel, but are floppier. Especially the 4th string. It looks as if they do sell heavier strings so I think I'll experiment. It's hard for me to tell as I have had the Aquila on on for some time, but these possibly sound more musical.

I'm using an 040 for a 4th...gonna try a spool of 045.

I think what I used before was the G string from an Aquila Guitar set.

ended up with set consisting of .025,.032,.040,.045,.025...set feels just as firm as my friends 22 fret with nylgut...big increase in volume too
