Saw a Pete Seeger DVD today. He was using a two post bridge with offset-flying-buttress arches parallel to the strings with the long side of the arch toward the neck. Please tell me about these. Thanks

If you can get your hands on the January, 2010 Banjo Newsletter, you will find an article, starting on page 44, describing in detail Seeger's unique bridge. it was made from a piece of circuitboard material. While Seeger liked it because of its stability, many banjo players would find it not to meet their needs. It also was never commercially available, and the article in Banjo Newsletter discussed replicating this one-of-a-kind bridge.

I believe there's a set of drawings to make one drifting around on the internet. I used to have them but haven't seen them for several years. I didn't try to make one because I heard it provided no real advantage. I also think there was a more scientific acoustic analysis of it's performance that came to the same conclusion. Amazing what information there is floating about on the net; some of it might even be true.

You're talking about the Stu Jamieson bridge that Pete used for many years -- though toward the end he was using an ordinary bridge on a pot I never recognized (it was not the old Vega with the bracket band). I sent a template of the bridge to my friend Rik Palieri in Burlington, VT, who passed it on to Bart Veerman, the Canadian bridge-maker, and he produced a Jamieson bridge for Rik's Gibson long-neck. I tried it on my own tubaphone with custom long-neck by Louis Freilicher, but I didn't notice any improvement in tone. Bart considered adding the Jamieson to his line of bridges, but I don't see it offerred on his website. I imagine he might be persuaded to make one on a custom basis.

I recall having a Grover bridge with supports parallel to the strings on my skin-head banjo back in the sixties. I don't know if that was akin to the bridge under discussion here. Its purpose was to keep the bridge from tipping over when humidity caused the head to stretch, releasing pressure off the bridge. At least, that was my purpose for it.

I remember the Grover wih feet and even had them on one or two banjos passing through my hands. I never knew just what the purpose was and it sure didn't ceate any different tone/sound/ plink/growl that any other bridge might not make as far as I could tell.
