That is a nice one with the thinner rim and the flathead hoop configuration. I have an Epiphone like this in new condition. They are excellent sounding banjos and I think somewhat under valued. Some come with a hardshell case too. My Epi came with the old gray cardboard case and still had the factory tissue paper used to pack it. I have since found an old hardshell case, but I figured out that the old cases are more rare than the old banjos. If I had an extra one I could probably get a premium price for it.

I've had one since it was new in 1967--although I thought the model was RB170. I've mispladed all the documentation on it. It is quite a bit scarred up now, but it sounds better every decade.

I expect this banjo is newer than 1963. I have serial number 153248 and was told by Gibson it was made in 1964. The RB-175 is a great model; plays and sounds like Pete Seeger would love. One even gets used to the bad tuners...!

Ah yes, the tuners. I never did care for those puny tuners. The set screw is always backing off and causing the peg to slip. I went back to check a couple things on my RB-175 # 115270 (1963?). It has the full thickness 3/4" (actually 13/16") with the archtop hoop configuration. It has a great tonal quality that I really like. I also have an Epiphone Gibson EB-44 (155259 - 1964?) that has a 5/8" rim and has the flathead hoop configuration. It is has a more open sound, for lack of a better description, that I find equally as appealing as the RB-175's. I have seen a Gibson RB-175 with the flathead hoop and the 5/8" rim configuration too. I wondered if Gibson went to the 5/8" rims and flathead hoops after 1963? Anyone know? Thanks

Yup, just checked and mine is 5/8". The lighter weight makes it easier to play in gigs! It also has a flat head and a tone ring which is, literally, a ring.
