Favorite Long Neck Singing Songs?

From Madame Twang on 1/23/2014 1:23:42 AM

I recently found a nice Gold Tone Long Neck, and got back to singing some oldie folk songs! (Love the lower pitch!) Now, need some memory wake up calls as to some of the favorite singing songs from the 50's - 70"s. Help?

Get a copy of Tim Jumper's Banjo Players Song Book. Lots of old sing along songs in there.
Might also look at your old folk albums and look up the songs on here for tabs. I am thinking 'Charlie on the MTA' with Dave Guard's banjo solo. I personally have been looking for tabs for some of the Ian and Sylvia songs, Summer Wages is one that I think would really fit in to a banjo accompaniment.

Many of the folk groups from the 50's - 60's featured a long neck banjo player. Songs by the Kingston Trio, the Limeliters, or the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem would work well with your banjo. I play clawhammer on my Gold Tone OT-800 LN, and it fits really well with folk, Celtic, and old time songs. A great place to start learning would be YouTube -- there is literally a boatload of material there to help get you started.

Hope this helps -- WB

Here's two that work so good with a long neck. Looks like Pete has the capo on the first fret:

Hobo's Lullay - youtube.com/watch?v=RsfcZgnXapE

Barbara Allen - youtube.com/watch?v=EPdbHfgM0h0

I believe this is an open tuning: Long Black Rifle - youtube.com

This has become a "Celtic" standard, apparently. You can hear what great multi-long neck parts might be pulled out of this arrangement. So far our little group of jammers always fall apart somewhere in the middle of it. (You can imagine the laughter.) - Sail Away (Orinoco Flow) - youtube.com/watch?v=2zkjQVh5KmQ

Have fun!

I have had a lot of fun with "Rise up Singing" from sing out. Lots of songs and chords from the folk boom. I got mine for &10 on E-Bay

Thanks for all the suggestions - Different from the Peter, Paul and Mary standbys, and 'round the fireside singalongs! How about Ian & Sylvia's 'On My Own' or Ballad of Spring Hill?
