From john bange on 8/6/2013 7:53:49 AM

price is good right now...missing the Elton arm rest and looks to have an 11" or a high crown head installed on a 10 15/16 pot..no case

Yup..but it's not the "Pete Seeger" model. Lacking the Tub-a-Phone tone ring, it's the "Folk Ranger" model. Nice relic but don't pay P.S. price for it.

Yea, he should drop the reference to Pete...It would be better if it were a folk ranger...didn't they have a rolled brass tone ring? This one has none, me thinks

I emailed the seller and noted the difference in the two models....hoping he'll revise his listing.

I bought it. Price was too good to pass up. Can't tell from the photos if it has a tone ring or not. I've got a Rickard tuba ring that I could put into it. It will make a great long neck for someone.

The mailman brought it today. Surprisingly good shape for it's age. And surprisingly good loud bright sound for having no metal tone ring at all. Takes me back to the Seeger model that I owned in the 60's.
It needs some upgrading. The guitar tuners are ugly and scratchy. Needs a geared 5th tuner. Needs a tuba ring. Should I?? Is this thing a collectable the way it is or should I make it into a good player?

I think the ss5's sound pretty good with the wood tonering. I had a couple of them and I was able to play one alongside a 22 fret Vega with a wood pot and the long neck seemed to be significantly louder...can that be?
similar head tension...same tail piece...we even used the same bridge

The rehab job is done now. The head was too large and interfering with the neck fit to the rim. Replaced the tuners. I've decided not to add a tubaphone tone ring unless a buyer demands it. It sounds great with just the wood rim. Almost as loud and bright as I remember my Seeger to be. If I were still a standup folk singer, I'd be very happy with it the way it is.
Look for it in the classifieds soon.
