Has any one tried??

From will1976 on 2/6/2013 6:19:25 AM

Has anyone tried to learn clawhammer by using

The How and Tao of Old Time Banjo  by Patrick Costello

This is written by Patrick Costello. I have downloaded a copy, (which by the way is free). I was just wondering if anybody has made any good progress by using this method only?

I look forward to your responses & happy picking.

Will

As a matter of fact, Will, I got started a couple of years ago by watching Patrick's online videos. It was a great way (for me, at least) to learn the basics of clawhammer. After awhile, though, I was really having trouble fine-tuning the technique...just wasn't happy with my sound or my progress in learning more. I finally got connected with a local teacher here, who really lit the fire under me!

No disrespect to Patrick or other fine teachers who make videos, but nothing beats personal time with a good teacher. As I said, Patrick's videos got me started, but I progressed more quickly with my teacher, and really developed a love for old time music because of him.

Many thanks for your reply. Trouble is though, it seems that the banjo is non-existent where I live, so until I find someone, as I thought, my learning ability may be limited.
Again many thanks.

Will

Will -- Don't give up hope. Many of the members here are from the UK. Hopefully they can help you locate a a good clawhammer teacher in your area.

Another possibility is on this website. Go to this page:

Tabs & Lessons / Find a Teacher

Search for teachers in your area. If there are none, then you might want to ask another teacher in the UK, and maybe he/she can recommend somebody that is close to your town.

Hope this helps -- WB

Many thanks for taking up your time by replying again. Your efforts are appreciated. I was also thinking of putting an advert in our local paper, where they normally have ads' of teachers and instruments.

With thanks

Will
