Greetings,

First, I'm just getting used to the Hangout layout, so if this post belongs somewhere else please feel free to tell me.

I joined recently and posted in the looking for advice forum http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/246287 not knowing there was a longneck group.

Anyway, snooping around and finding who sells what I was going through the OME site.  I noticed that the last several frets seem to be truncated or shortened almost for asthetic considerations.  I used to use those frets for harmonics on occasion.  Is this style prevelant or only with OME?

Be well,

Welcome, Tim, to the Hangout and the Longneck page. I have a close association with OME that goes back to the ODE days in the 60's. A few other members have an even closer association with Chuck and the gang up the street. As I remember, if you're interested in an OME, they will work with you on any design changes you want. I recently took possession of the first OME custom long neck to be mated to an early Tubaphone pot; give the boys enough time and they can do almost anything.
I'm a bit mystified about your concerns on short frets and their relation to harmonics because frets are not in play when playing harmonics. Maybe you can help me out there.
Anyway...welcome again and feel free to chat about any topics....Especially long necks!

Greetings,

Harmonics: You're absolutely right that the frets have nothing to do with it. It was the first time I'd seen a finger board with such a fret arrangement. Having run around with a Kay, way back when, I never could use the last five or six frets anyway ... .

I think I'm going to have to do more research on mixing and matching parts. Isn't something I've done before but so many at the BHO seem to mod their instruments ... .

Be well,

Kim

The shorter frets could be for a frailing platform. I use the harmonic at the 19th fret to frail above. I have all my frets, still frail there. Longneck, whatever key.

Some mandolins have that kind of fretboard.

With a longneck, you'll need a harmonics permit and 24 hrs. notice.
