brown truck came today

From john bange on 9/25/2012 3:55:42 PM

I'm working on a new long neck.  I bought a Vega Woodsongs long neck.  I have loved my Little Wonder long neck custom and have always wanted another for back up.  Inquires to Deering as to price and wait time have not been what I wanted to hear.

I have not been a fan of the gold finish on the rim, armrest and t/p of the Woodsongs so I bought all the stuff to change it to nickel.

My plan was to change out the black head also but having seen it up close with the Deering supplied nickel tension rim, I might use it for a while.  I hear the black heads are very bright sounding so I'll have to see.

I am waiting on a Kerschner tail piece, a 5 star arm rest ,a 5th string post and new Rotomatics

When all this stuff arrives, I will string with 30, 40, 50, 60lb fishing line and a nylgut 4th string from Aquilla's all nylgut set...good fun

I can break a string every once in a while so the back up with pre-stretched strings is nice to have

I put a black head on my Gold Tone long neck. My ear isn't good enough to comment on the resulting sound but my eyes certainly do approve of the appearance. It's accentuated by the black rim-mounted Snark tuner, the black bridge and the black cradle strap. As far as I'm concerned, the only drawback to this black head is the inability to 'pencil mark' the bridge location. That's where harmonics comes in anyway.

sounds cool John - tell us more about Nylon strings!

I use fishing line because most of the sets are too short. The Labella 17 set is long enough but too light. I can use 30lb for my 1st, 50lb for 2nd, 60 for 3rd and 40 for my 5th. I use a nylgut 4th string fron the Aquilla all nylgut set...it lasts forever...I was wearing out the wound 4th's. My banjo's are quite loud set up like this. Stretching in takes no longer than real banjo strings.

staying with the black head...both banjos sound the same and I like the looks of the black head with the mahogany and ebony and nickel...Frailinaway is right!

the modifications to both banjos are as follows:
grover tuners
shubb 5th string long capo
5th string post(nut)
Kerschner tailpiece
Snuffy Smith 3/4 bridge
all 5 nylon strings
Rickard closed end nuts
new tension brackets from Elderly
5 star nickel arm rest
this has given me 2 nearly identical long neck banjos...one with a maple neck and one with mahogany. all gold pieces are gone from the Woodsongs and replaced with nickel. I got the nickel tension hoop from Deering and sold the gold stuff on ebay or BHO classified. I am keeping the shiny black head for now. I cannot hear any sound differences between the two. I used my handy dandy drum head tension guage to get the head tension as close as possible. The fishing line and the Aquilla nylon 4th string are stretched in now and both banjos will stay in tune for a few tunes...as long as the nylon strings on my Martin which is as good as it gets with any nylon string instrument I have had...I still tune a lot...always have. This has been fun.
