Every time I pick up the Deering case with my Bacon Belmont long neck, I want to move the handle. 66 Gibson case better, but also lighter, so not as noticeable if you have to tip the neck end up.
Maybe now that I’m locked down, I’ll think about moving that handle....

Well I was walking down the steps when the message came through telling me there was another comment on this. So I walked straight across the basement and picked up my Deering LN case, and thought “ OK, let’s give this a try“.
I pulled back the interior fabric to drill out the backside of the rivets holding the handles. Wasn’t too hard except for the angle of the one near the neck protector. Oh yeah, there’s two brass screws that have to come out to remove the block that the heel lays in at the base of the neck.
I set it on a half inch wide piece of wood standing up on the narrow end and found that the balance point of the case, fully loaded including the banjo, is actually just about centered on the original rivet from the forward handle retainer.
So I marked the two new locations with masking tape and I know where I’m going to drill. I have an errand to run tomorrow at the hardware store anyway, so I will get some brass nuts and bolts to reinstall the handle as well as some fabric and trim adhesive to glue the material back.
I’ve been taking pictures, so if I can figure out a way to post pictures to these comments, I will do so. That way you would know what you were getting into if anybody else ever went into this project.
I just happen to finish it riveting together and epoxying an old electric guitar case and had quite a bit of success. So I figured, hey, how hard can it be to move the handle on the Banjo case?
I guess we will find out.

OK, I had to go to the hardware store today so I bought some brass hardware to do the handle move.
Peeled back the interior case lining and drilled the new holes in the appropriate places based on where it looks like it would balance properly. Used screws instead of rivets.
It balances perfectly now! I took photos, so I will create a topic in the forums and then post the link here to that topic. I don’t know if I can attach photos here. And I am without Internet due to a thunderstorm, so it’ll be a day or two until I can get on the computer and get it all up there for everybody to see.
