Inherited ཿ Vega Long Neck needs a new home

From RAMcGOO on 2/29/2020 4:49:14 AM

I recently inherited my late older brother's 1967 Vega X-Cel Long Neck. It is Serial No: A-127866. My brother was friend of Pete Seeger and, as it was told to me, in '67 Pete had Vega build him two of these models with an extra wide neck and they built a third one for my brother to the same specs. Is there any way to corroborate this?  It needs a new home if anyone is interested! IMG_1769.jpg IMG_1770.jpg IMG_1771.jpg IMG_1773.jpg IMG_1774.jpg

You have a jewel. The serial numbers are obtainable. If you want Provenance, meaning proving whose banjo it was, then you would need some paperwork.
I'm proud that your brother stood with Pete. "Keep bringing people together," Pedro Seeger

If a collector would flip it, or store it out of use until the value goes up or anything like that, then I strongly oppose that because it tramples the real people who actually play, perform, think and enjoy banjos like this.
I could not afford anything like that, so I started building longnecks myself.

It might set off a feeding frenzy. It's 53 years old, just a kid.

I like having you crack open the subject here first where the players are.

Collectors are fine people. Other people collect

Was your brother on the Clearwater? Or did he perform along the way.

Your brother was a playing musician. I personally would not want this piece to go into hiding or solitary confinement.

Ferraris are meant to drive.

So even if you don't play one yourself. Please be very careful here and let the good guys on the hangout know so they and we can all team up for this '67 VEga that isn't a Chevy.
Thanks for posting, we all appreciated those craftsmen and masters.

Wow, she's a beauty, I love the stars on the fretboard. Do you know who any of the signatures are?

The signatures on the head are the original Kingston Trio (Shane, Guard & Reynolds), the clancy Brothers, Pete Seeger, Bo Diddley, all of my family (6, 4 are deceased) and I think Alex Hassilev (faded) and lots of his close friends.

How wide is the neck at the nut? That might add credence to the idea that it was custom built?

RAMcGOO says:

It measures 1 7/16" at the nut. Hope that helps.

Yes, That's a nice wide neck. Maybe someone else knows what width the stock Vega LNs had.
