It ain't goin' nowhere. Such a sweet sounding banjo any position, any tuning, deep and rich...61' dowelstick.Best sounding banjo I have. My love is rekindled, can anyone else relate?

Yep but more in the way of what music it relates to - longneck does not move me for bluegrass or for Classical banjo but for 60's style folk music (if there be such a beast - the trouble is after A Mighty Wind it's difficult to take it seriously again) nothing better

me too...started out playing the usual songs...COAST OF CALIFORNIA etc. but I have evolved and mine sounds great on Leon Redbone stuff to MOONLIGHT BAY...Randy Newman's POLITICAL SCIENCE. aside from hitting the bass player in the head once in a while, it fits in anything

And BTW; all the above are folk music.

Sorry have to disagree over Bluegrass being folk music as I'd understand the term. Bluegrass was an artificial development by entertainers deriving a living by playing in public/on radio for money - look at Monroe etc.. I like it, but think it bears as much relation to folk as a macdonalds burger does to a real home cooked one.

It might be a generational thing. I'm 74. I think PH is right. Old time/bluegrass/folk...it all comes from the same places in my mind. Seems like a heard some of each back in the coffee shops during the 60's

My guitar teacher who introduced me to Pete Seeger and got me playing with him when I was 8 years old in 1959 the same year gave me records by Josh White, Harry Belefonte, Cisco Houston, Woody Guthrie, etc. Introduced me to Bess Hawes, (who co-authored M.T.A, Sam Hinton , and many other "folkies", also encouraged me the same year to go see Flatt and Scruggs and the foggy Mnt. boys , along with opening act Merle Travis at the Ash Grove in L.A. As John Bange hints at and Peter Rowan came right out and said...different branches, same tree. Did Doc Watson play folk or bluegrass? How about Norman Blake? I submit they played both, and if you go to most any festival during the summer, you'll see all of it being played, and re-played interchangeably , and that, my friends is truly what the real folk process is all about.

The trouble I see with this is the commercial folk of the 60's (Belafonte, P,P & M etc) was first and foremost put together for a paying audience often by entertainment managers. Even Doc Watson originally played rock n roll (on a Gibson LP no less) for money but became more aware of the folk potential as the 'manufactured' folk boom took over. I think Happy Traum's book says he then went round family and got together as much folk material as he could find. Some like Doc came from traditional families but a lot did not. Now if we are going to talk about folk music as music of the ordinary people evolved over hundreds of years, handed down in families and performed largely for non commercial purposes then these 60 folkies and the bluegrass people do not count as folk musicians in my book.

I recall going to Tom Paxton's concerts in the late 60's and while it was great, never thought it was folk.

“all music is folk music; I ain’t never heard no horse sing a song,” Louis Armstrong

So Cleitus, are you saying that to be real folk music one has to come from a "traditional family",(whatever that is), only play music in the confines of your own home, invisible to the world, and never make a dollar off your music? Also, you speak of folk music evolving over hundreds of years, just when and where did it stop evolving ?

the term "manufactured folk boom" really raises the hair on the back of my neck. A business agent takes the "authenticity" out of the music???? I don't get it. You like Scruggs, I like Seeger. It's not a big deal. The only difference, I see is that the long neckers don't bad mouth the Mastertones and other types of music.
