Bacon Belmont thoughts and observations

From john bange on 8/3/2017 8:03:43 AM

got my new 60's Bacon Belmont long neck from a fellow BHO member.  it is in excellent condition but needed a new head.  this was a hidden flaw and only showed itself when I tightened the head.

what suprised me was the presence of a metal tone ring, sitting on the wood rim.  I did not think the Belmont line had one.  So, that is why it is as loud as it is...even with nylon, harp strings

as I usually do, I'll try to score a little profit and sell this find for a while but the more I keep playing it, the more I like it...nobody is buying long necks anyway...  Besides, it will make an excellent home defence weapon...it has a neck like a baseball bat

You are not joking - a few years back here in NZ someone claimed he fended off a homosexual assault by ramming a 5string banjo neck down his attacker's throat and killing him - think it was a long neck.

bought a new TKL hard case from Elderly for my Bacon...I'll let it run on Fleabay until tonight then keep it. I can break a harp string now and then so the Bacon will make a real nice back-up...good campfire banjo too.
I know the neck lacks a truss rod but I still would recommend one of these. It is not quite as loud as my Vega but it has a pleasant tone and is way, way lighter.

John, I have been recovering from surgery since May Having geat problem trying to negotiate BHO with the changes. I have two banjos that stay on stage stands, one of which is a Bacon Belmont long neck. Never taken it apart but if it has a tone ring it won't surprise me. Neck is straight, stays in tune. I keep elevating the status of this banjo and would not be afraid to use it instead of my Vega or Gibsons. Hope you do keep it and it will grow on you as mine has. Respect it !!!
