At least for me,...

From danielburdett on 1/28/2011 4:19:15 PM

being in this particular group means that the simplest of events sometime lead me down an uncontrollable road of thought.  One such journey occurred this past weekend at the Steep Canyon Rangers 10th anniversary concert.  Nicky, the fiddle player, finished absolutely killing it on a break to a song and subsequently dropped his bow.  Mind you, I was very much a part of this group at this time in the show...  Upon seeing this I concluded banjo players are more committed to their instrument than most other instruments.  I've seen guitar players and mandoline players drop their pics before, but never a fiddler.  Seeing Nicky do this made me feel as though when I play I am strapped in for the whole ride.  There is no playing too hard, with the very rare acception, and popping a pic off.  We are in it for the long haul.  Hell, old time players are even more strapped down, they have no pic at all between them and the music.  Not sure at all where this thought ended up.... But it was something that happened to me and I thought if anyone on the hangout could appreciate it, it would be this group of people. I hope this thought nugget doesn't fall upon barren ground.  Thanks for the forum to ramble.

Speaking of being strapped in, one of my BHO friends in Al. made me a strap that is just too cool. It connects in three places, lays under hooks and around the back of the neck. My banjo doesn't try to roll forward or move and it's really secure. I'd post pictures, but we can't post them here. Maybe a new suggestion for Mr. Schlange.

True, you don't merely play a banjo; you more or less wear the thing. Mine weighs a gentle half ton. Consider too the much-maligned accordion and the noble Sousaphone. They're in the same boat, those cats. Blow a literate phrase on an oboe and the gals in the gallery are all over you. All women want you and all men want to be like you. Or vice versa. The mechanics of it are unimportant. What remains is that they have respect. All I've got is calluses on the tips of my fingers and I fear it has robbed my love-making of some its subtlety. If not its vigor. Thank-you. Thank-you very much.

I like your train of thought Daniel. I think i've managed to persuade a good friend of mine to pursue his lifelong dream of taking up the Sitar in 2011. Now there's an instrument to be strapped into. He'll have respect and the girls around him soon i think. Those things have at least 17 tuning pegs. I might go around for a smoke when he's learn't a tune. Although this may not be for several years as I think it's the damnedest of instruments to master.
