I found a four string banjo. I need several bits of advice. Where do I find a book or someone in my area to teach me? What would be the best picks to use? Thanks!

If you're looking to play jigs and reels (irish style) then you could order Gerry 'Banjo' O'Connor's book or DVD online. Pickwise, I use .73mm .88mm Dunlop picks, but others hae been known to use .0mm gauge plecs. try them all and you'll find your way. A good starter lesson is to play the scale (are you tuned to GDAe or CGDA?) from top to bottom and back again. If playing GDAe, start on the open G string, then 2nd, 4th and 5th fret; repeat on the D string, then open, 2nd, 3rd and 5th fret on the A string and open, 2nd, 3rd on the e string and back again. That's your G scale. Fingers to be used vary, but generally you would jstart with index on the 2nd fret, middle finger on the 3rd and 4th frets and your little finger on the 5th fret. I am finding that there are teachers who will teach guitar and sometimes banjo as long as it is 5 string...but 4 string is another matter. I will look up Gerry O'Connor book. I am looking to play gospels really. That was my 'soul' :) purpose in learning the banjo.
