Revised Tab With Fingering: Lilting Banshee

Years ago Tom Hanway asked why I didn't include picking fingering in my tab. My reason was I thought players experienced enough to play it would have their preferences. But I also realized it... Read More

Celtic tabs: Donnybrook Fair & Gallagher's Frolics

I posted these to the Hangout tab archive back in 2011. They both tend more to the melodic style rather than the Celtic three finger style as Tom describes it. But I think the melodies... Read More

Carolan's Draught (Celtic Fingerstyle)
Linked by Tom Hanway 12 years ago: Similar to my recording for Complete Book of Irish & Celtic 5-String Banjo, and in my BHO Music Files. Note fretting-hand fingerings: index (i), middle (m), ring (r), and pinky (p) fingers. Enjoy!

MP3: Carolan's Concerto - from Complete Book of Irish & Celtic 5-String Banjo
Linked by Tom Hanway 12 years ago: This classic piece by the blind harper O'Carolan (1670-1738) is perfect for Celtic Fingerstyle banjo. It's a popular session tune, played with reverence for the last of the Irish harper-composers.

Blackberry Blossom (hornpipe)
Linked by Tom Hanway 12 years ago: I recorded this back in ’98. I play it today with less bounce and a bit slower. It’s an old American BG and OT standard that has found its way into ITM thanks to Eileen Ivers and John Whelan. Enjoy!

Tablature: Swallowtail Jig, The
Linked by Tom Hanway 13 years ago: The prototype Tom Hanway Stelling Swallowtail is named for this jig, also the reel, and the book Swallow Barn. Here's the whole tune in E Dorian mode with melodic and rhythmic variations.

Tablature: Anach Cuain (E Dorian/Beginner)
Linked by Tom Hanway 13 years ago: Moved from the standard A Dorian to E Dorian, this is a beginner version of the famous Irish air and lament. I've added fretting-hand fingerings. Enjoy!

Tablature: Swallowtail Jig, The (Opening Phrase)
Linked by Tom Hanway 13 years ago: This is an exercise in Celtic fingerstyle banjo illustrating possible melodic variations for the opening phrase of this jig, also comfortable fretting-hand and picking-hand options. (E Dorian)

Tablature: Anach Cuain (Air/Lament)
Linked by Tom Hanway 13 years ago: The famous Irish air and lament, based on Dolly MacMahon's sean-nos version in A Dorian. This is highly ornamented. It's can also be played in 3/4 and in 6/8, as jig, known as 'The Sheep in the Boat'.
