what strings are you all using on your Hatfields?

From loc50welder on 6/4/2016 12:55:56 PM

I've been trying out different strings for my Hatfield Celebrity. Haven't find one I really like yet. Tried GHS Almost Mediums (my usual go to string) and GHS Americana LIghts. Both seemed dull and not very bright on the Hatfield. Trying out a set of the Earl Scruggs lights today and see what happens. Also going to look at some D'Addario EJ60+'s and see what happens. Looking for a brighter sound.

Hello, I really like the GHS 140s, which are the J.D. Crowe Lights Studio, but also use the 135 when the 140s aren't available. The Arthur Hatfield string set that your banjo came with are very close to the 135. I think only the 3rd string is a touch heavier.

I found the D'Addarios to last longer between gigs, but didn't have the crispness on my banjo that the GHS. I favor the J.D. Crowe wound 4th.

Please keep us posted on your findings and good luck.

Try D'addario EJ60+ I really like these strings and should brighten your banjo up.

I am definitely trying to EJ60+'s next. So far, I am pleased by what the Earl lights sound like. I want to play on them for a few weeks to see what they sound like after they've be thrashed for awhile. They do seem a bit brighter than the almost mediums.

i'm currently trying out my 1st set of amb cryo
banjo - hatfield celebrity (just born 12/04/15)

strings - amb cryo's (11-13-16-24-11)
these babys are fat (odd feeling, new to me)
very nice 1st & 2nd string tone
really nice 3rd & 4th string tone
much richer than any ghs strings i've had
also helped a bit of an intonation problem
i've had with this banjo
impression - best sounding strings i've had on
this jo. but gee they sure are fat. (? twice
as good tone as any set of ghs strings, 5-6
different sets (mostly lights/med lights) i've
used.
cant wait to try out some amb cryo lights or
med lights
also, i use ome lights on my wildwood
troubador (open back) absolutyly gorgeous
tone on that jo (not tried em on the
celebrity yet - didn't care for them on my
old/sold rk80.
i'm not (yet) a good banjo player but i can &
do appreciate good tone.
hope you have as good of a day as i'm having

so far, I am fairly happy with the Gibson Earl Scruggs lights. Compared them to the Arthur Hatfield set and they are very close in size. I do think they are a big brighter. I still want to have a go at the EJ60+'s and possibly Elixir's just to say that I tried them.

After trying several brands, I have settled on the D'Addario EJ60+. They really brightened up my Celebrity and really project well compared to the GHS and Gibson strings I tried. I liked the sound of the Gibsons at first, but I didn't think they held their tone for very long. Will see how long the EJ's do as far as longevity. So far it seems like a winner. After I try a few sets and am satisfied, I am going to be taking the Hatfield up to Elderly for a setup. I try to give banjos at least 6 months to settle and then have the setup revisited to see if the head has loosened or the bridge needs repositioned.

gee loc50, why bother with elderly for your set-up. head south, and think arthur hatfield. he be the man!
