I know it should be about same for any banjo but since I am getting a new Hatfield I thought I would be specific in asking about the shipping price of a new Hatfield to a state in the Southeast; Alabama to be exact. Am trying to compare the cost against a road trip to pick the banjo up in person on Burton Ridge Road. Know it would cost a bit more to drive but with cheaper gas might could manage it based on what it would cost in shipping. Anyone got an approximate they would care to share if you've had one shipped. Thanks.

Bobby, I never like the thought of shipping a banjo. I have heard too many horror stories. If time is not the issue, You might want to think of picking it up and you get to play it with Arthur and you will have a great time. Maybe if you time it right you can catch a good act at the Station Inn on your trip.

Bobby if you can, drive up to Arthur's and pick up your Banjo in person. It will be worth your trip to spend some time with Arthur and enjoy the experience. You will get to see the shop your Banjo was made in and it will mean a lot more to you on the way home. I have owned four Hatfield Banjos and currently own Celebrity #5. I try to visit Arthur once a year and it is a 1050 mile round trip for me.

I'm another one in the 'Make the Drive if it's at all possible' camp. Your banjo will be perfect but Arthur will bend over backwards to make sure that it's exactly the way that you want it. You also need to try it out on the 'stupid grin stool'. If your timing is right you may even get some of Bev's Biscuits and Gravy.
One of the reasons that I decided to make the thirteen hour drive was that I'd heard too many horror stories about instruments being damaged in transit. I had no idea how special meeting Arthur and Bev would be.

Since your gave me great advice and the lead on my Hatfield 4-5 years ago, I will return some good advice. Go get it. My trip to visit Arthur was:
1) 2 Mile walk to bus
2) 12 Mile bus ride to ferry
3) 8 mile ferry ride to Seattle
4) 54 Hour train ride from Seattle to Indianapolis
5) 4 Hour drive from Indianapolis to Glasgow
2,457 miles. Worth every inch.
Hope it works out where you make it. I did receive a banjo for another hangout member from out of country and I wouldnt worry about shipping if you have to go that route. It was very well packed as they have had lots of practice and do it right.

"things" are temporary - memories are forever (and at my age they just keep getting better). ditto on the stupid grin stool. be sure to get some arthur hatfield magic dust on your "jo". skip the rc cola. skip the biscuts and gravy and go for a big bowl of bev's possum & dumplings. and if arthur mentions popcorn - run for it.

I drove from Baltimore Md. To get mine, To much chance of it getting busted up shipping, besides a few hours with Arthur is Priceless ! Plus you will have some of the magic shop dust get on you. LOL

I drove from Winnipeg. Constructed an entire three-week road trip to Florida and told the wife it was a vacation (well, it was), just so we could stop by Arthur's place on the way back and pick up my Hatfield left-handed Special.
