Thinking of joining the clan

From bAJNo on 2/14/2011 5:55:01 PM

Hi one and all,

I'm currently thinking off joining this illustrious band of hatfield owners. I spoke to Arthur this morning and we had a chat about how to ship to Australia.

I'm debating between a Special and an Aurora. I'm leaning toward the Special as it has a punchier sound.

Any thoughts?

Can't speak to the Aurora. I have a custom Hatfield that's essentially based on a Special. I can tell you that Arthur builds a great banjo at an extremely fair price, and if I was ordering sight unseen from the other side of the world, I'd want to buy from someone who's as fair and honest as Arthur.

My thoughts exactly.

I have not heard an Aurora in the flesh, but I have heard great things about them.

I could not want anything more out of my Hatfield Custom. It is a remarkable instrument.

I love my special... the sound is very fine and its a fine piece of art as well. I hope to some day try an Aurora but have not at this juncture.

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone have a clue about shipping to Australia? It seems crazy expensive via UPS. Is USPS worth a go?

I've shipped a couple of smaller tenor banjos to Austrailia via USPS...no problems.

I'll add my two cents worth for the Aurora. I always try to play all of the banjos Aurthur brings to SPBGMA. The Ebbe tone ring models always impress me. You can go wrong with any Hatfield model. But if I were buying a banjo now...I'd give the Aurora serious consideration.

Just played my Special and love the tone. I also have a custom from Arthur with honduran rosewood tone-ring made by FQMS. Both are awesome. You would love the Special. Haven't hear the other. I have had a number of banjos from professional makers and have sold them all but my two Hatfields and never will. Fit and finish are perfect. Good luck in the decision!

I can speak to my experiance from owning a Hatfield Special and a Celebrity. I love them both and agree that you will not go wrong with any Hatfield banjo. I do however like the Walnut Special over the Maple Celebrity. It has more punch and a bit more low end growl to it. Both are great banjos.
