I've only been playing a few months, but I already know I'm not going to stop. I just ordered a Hatfield Special, mainly because I really like the look of that burl walnut, but Arthur's web page talks about a "Walnut sound." Is there really a difference in sound between maple, walnut, and mahogany? I always thought it was the tone ring and the strings that made the sound.

	eagleisland says: 7/19/2014 12:48:22 PM Setup has a huge impact on sound - but all other things being equal maple has the punchiest sound and high ends; mahogany has the darkest sound and the growlier low end, and walnut is somewhere between the two. Picked close to the bridge a walnut banjo can come close to the pop of maple; picked closer to the center of the head it approaches the warmth of mahogany. I like the versatility in tone (and I have a Special too, though it's HIGHLY customized in almost all aspects).
