Stopped by to see Arthur

From steveloggie on 6/20/2020 6:05:24 PM

Our Texas band recorded a music video in Nashville this past week, so I took the opportunity to swing by Arthur's shop for minor tweaking on my 2013 Stonycreek. Seven years later it is still my go to performance/recording instrument. It just gets better & better. Arthur is a great builder, and a great guy to boot!

I hope he's well! I picked up my Special from his shop that very same year. He's an artist, a fine craftsman, and a very fine man.

A couple of weeks ago, I broke the neck on my Hatfield Custom that Arthur built for me 8 years ago. No folks, it was not on a guitar stand,... I was actually putting away in my $1100 Calton case, ( see the irony in that ?) that was laying in the back area of my SUV, when the tip of the peghead slightly (and I do mean very slightly ) bumped the edge of the trunk . It was such a gentle bump, that I was astounded to see a hairline crack at the nut. That crack extended all the way around to the other side. Banjo necks are so vulnerable right there at the nut because they're only 1-1/8" wide !

Anyway, it got shipped off to Arthur the next day and he is going to build me a new one. I know that he could have repaired it and it would have been every bit as good but, of the 3 or 4 banjos I have, my Hatfield is my "go-to" banjo for everything. Nothing sounds as clear and crisp. I want it right.
From my chat on the phone with Arthur and Beverly, I think they are doing well but she struggles so much with the COPD. I have 2 family members with COPD and it makes life so difficult.
I don't know of any finer people than Beverly and Arthur. Naturally, if I can manage to schedule it, I will make that 12 hour round trip, drive to pick the banjo up, mostly just see them, but also not to risk the shipping.
You don't meet craftsmen like Arthur very often.
Cheers, Knight
