I’m in the market for a bottle gourd banjo and am seeking advice from fellow players.
My goal (like so many others, I’m sure) is to achieve the sound made so famous by Adam Hurt on the instrument built (and apparently loaned to him) by David Hyatt. Here’s a YouTube video for reference: youtube.com/watch?v=HuMIh1-_yiM
Obviously, the skill of the player is the main determining factor in the sound here, but it’s also clear that the instrument itself is contributing toward this (absolutely beautiful) sound.
My questions are:
1. What specific features should I look for, or request from a custom builder, in order to achieve a less muddy/tubby sound, and a clearer, more resonant, sustained and “bell-like” sound?
2. What modern-day custom builders should I consider? I’m a serious player looking for a high-end instrument, so money is no object.
Thanks in advance for any hints, tips or advice you may have!
Todd
