Notes going sharp at end of sustain

From Mark Gensamer on 9/24/2013 2:18:09 PM

I've noticed that sometimes at the end of a note the Snark tuner shows the note going sharp.  Is this normal?  Also, I can see that when I tune a string, it is in tune but that when I fret a note it is sharp. Any thoughts?

I've noticed this with my Snark as well when I'm tuning. It seems to be a bit more lately. What I've discovered is that when I'm tuning, my right arm is pressing relatively firmly on the arm rest. While I'm adjusting the tuning knob, say on the fourth string, I'm actually pulling the neck back very slightly. This causes a greater amount of backward force on the neck, slightly modifying the exact note I'm trying to get.

I noticed that both the coordinator rod nut inside the pot as well as the neck hanger nut were a hair loose. We've just had a major drop in humidity in our area, so I'm guessing there has been enough wood shrinkage to cause the looseness. I tightened the nuts up, and the tuning issue seems to be better.

Perhaps if your neck has loosened up slightly as well, this could be causing the sharp notes when fretting. There may be a bit more space between the strings and the neck than there were in the past.

If your fretted notes are sharp, check your bridge position to make sure your intonation is right. If the bridge is set right, you should be in tune when fretting octaves on the 12th fret of each string and 17th fret for the 5th string. If it's sharp, slide the bridge a tad closer to the bridge in small increments, re-tuning, and checking each time until it is correct.

*slide the bridge a tad closer to the "tailpiece".

Thanks Rob and BanjoJeff. I'm due for new strings so I'll put on Dave Hum and check out those issues while I have it apart!
