I see from the archives that this subject came up in 2009. I recently purchased a new Classic Special. It was originally equipped with a 5/8" tall bridge. Even though the banjo was very playable, I decided to lower the action with a 9/16 (supplied by Bart Veerman whom I highly recommend). At that point I was at the hairy edge of a little buzzing on the 4th string, frets 2 through 5. As I inspected the neck more closely I saw the "fret wear" as reported by forum members in 2009. In actuality, there was a coat of hard laquer that I could peel off with my fingernail. In spots it had worn through to the fret wire (especially in more played areas like the 2nd through 5th frets on the 4th string). It had the effect of behaving like a high fret when a worn area was lower than an unworn fret. So after carefully peeling off all of the laquer with my fingernails and revealing nice, shiny frets....no more buzzing :)
I don't know if Deering has a process step where they usually remove this coating and mine got missed, or if they leave it on all of them. Anyone else experienced this?
