Goodtime Parlor

From Scanbran on 12/2/2012 7:37:06 AM

Two years ago I had the idea of picking up a Goodtime Parlor banjo. I always liked the look and feel of these banjos, and thought it would be an ideal car banjo. They were not in stock and for a weird reason I decided to buy a Southern Queen modified Goodtime Special. It was a great banjo, but just not exactly what I wanted, so I sold it shortly afterwards. I have regretted it ever since as it was so nice to play, so last week I luckily found someone local selling the GT Parlor that I had wanted all along. It was used, in good condition and half the price of a new one. I snapped it up and am so glad I did. The good times are great banjos, and the Parlor is such a perfect size for playing out and about.

I got my GT Special last October and am really enjoying it. It seems that every day it is easier to play. Has anyone experimented with light guage strings? How did it go?

I just put light gauge strings on mine - I think it must have had mediums on when I get it because now the tension feels lower and the sound is a bit thinner. I also have a problem pulling the first string off the fingerboard when playing as the fret ends are a bit too angled.
Might put mediums back on it to help with this.

I've been playing a GT Special for a few years now and always thought about putting a "parlor" neck on it as arthitis is making it difficult to play the long reach. However, I found a good deal on a new parlor and, like you, I am thrilled with the new ease of playing. Just the right size to cart around also. Now that I've played with this a little while I'm going to definitely put the shorter neck on my "Special" as well.

Idertongap and Scanbran: All three Goodtimes I've bought new came with light gauge strings from Deering. I've used other brands but never had the need to try anything heavier. Am thinking about putting some Nylguts on my new Parlor though and will use heavier ones for that.
Happy pickin" pards !

I use D'Addario J69 light gauge strings on all 4 of my Deerings (3 are Goodtimes), and that's what I prefer. Tried J60 but didn't care for them. Have also tried medium gauge, but they felt clumsy and slow, so I've stuck with the light gauge. Stan
