Window Rattler

From BackDraft307 on 11/13/2011 4:50:50 PM

I have been working on my Clawhammer playing and checking out all of the banjo sounds...  I really like the sound of what Zepp did to his Deering GT.   So I picked up a no-knot tail and hanger, Remo elite head, heavy moon bridge, GHS light strings. adjust the action to just under 1/4 inch at the 19th.  The head is tight but not blue grass rock hard tight. I got the whole banjo set up, and now... in double c or even open G...  OMG!  I hit the 4th string and the windows in the house rattle.... and the sustain goes on and on and on.......... I have though of switching out to  Nylgut  strings.  I would like to get it set up for old time clawhammer music... Stuff the reach deep in the past where stories are told...   BUT right now... I think I just created a Mini upright bass.....  Options, Opinion, snide remakes?   HELP!

Until I can get a Vaga, or Chuck Lee, or you name banjo of choice...  I have to work with what I got.Window

I "Zepped" mine too....except for the scoop and I used light Moon...absolutely love the sound. I've since purchased a Goldtone BC-350 and I'm really happy with it....12" head, wider neck and scoop. However....I remain a Goodtimer and have no plans to get rid of it.....great banjo for the money. If you don't want to scoop your Goodtime check out Bart Veerman's (BHO member) raised 5th string bridge....It raises 5th string 1/8" and really makes playing over the neck easy. I plan on switching it back and forth with the moon. It's a great bridge and Bart is awesome to work with....good luck! Rick

P.S. I forgot to mention...I also made and installed a brass tone ring on mine(pictures on my home page). I used 1/4" rolled brass from Ace Hardware and it made my banjo look a little like an arch top because it raised the head 1/8". I later ground it down on both sides to flatten it some. It now sits about 1/16th over head....just enough to get tension on it when the head is tightened.....much better and I think it really improved sound.
