Ball Bearing "Newbie" Question

From Robby Boone on 3/14/2014 8:49:38 PM

Hey Guys, being a new owner of an old ball bearing I have a newbie question. I understand shotgun ring, but I don't know the difference in a scalloped or non scalloped ring. I saw this mentioned while reading thru some threads posted to this group. Can anyone explain the difference and/or what this is to a dumb ol' hillbilly?

Thanks in advance,

Robby

Hi Robby,
From what I've been able to find out, the 25 BB tone ring had scallops cut into it but the 26 did not. I have a 26, which is really great, but I haven't seen a 25 tr so I don't know what the scallops look like. I'm sure someone with more info will chime in. Congratulations on your recent acquisition. I tried to sell mine a while back, but couldn't get what it was worth, so I plan to keep it. It's a really great banjo and you can vary the set-up to really vary the tone. They are very sweet-sounding banjos and I love the tone of mine. Doesn't give up anything in volume as some say.

hmmmm. can't see how to insert a photo.. but if you go to my homepage and view my pictures, I have 3 photos of a 25 ring. Not great pictures, but you can see the scalloping.

Also Robby, my 1925 has the lettering "mastertone" on the peghead, but does NOT have the shotgun holes in the hoop. Don't look for anything to be consistent with Gibson.

gdocs 25 tone ring looks like mine. I have shotgun skirt but mine is a pretty early number 8041.

Interesting. My 26 doesn't have the scalloping. No wonder they quit making the BB model. Way too much labor and expense involved. I'm glad they made them for as long as they did. Otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion about one very cool banjo.

Thanks guys for the help with this and the info that you provided. I am supposing that from looking at gdoc's photos that I will have to have the banjo apart to see if I have a scalloped ring or not. I will be taking it apart sometime soon for cleaning and a trial run with a 5 string neck that a fellow BHO member was gracious enough to loan me.

To gdoc......it's interesting that you have a 25' that is commonly thought to have the shotgun ring but does not, mine is a 26' that is commonly thought not to be but is! I have fooled with 29' and up OPF Gibsons for years and know some about them, but these early Mastertones are a whole new ball game that I don't have a clue about.......but I'm hoping to learn.

Thanks again to all that responded, I appreciate your help and I know that I will have more questions before this project is done!
