Some BB questions

From loggerhead on 11/11/2013 7:47:39 AM

As I look for a possible BB for purchase, I have discovered a few questions I need answered. First, how many BBs and springs constitute a full set? Did this vary by year/model? Did all years and models use washers as well? If washers are needed, are replacements available? Where might I obtain any missing BBs or springs?

Thanks for help or leads.

My early 1925 (8041) BB has 24 holes in the rim. At the Bottom of each hole is a paper washer followed by a metal washer, followed by a spring followed by two washers and then a Ball Bearing. Each of these 3 metal washers have different size or shape holes if I remember right with the largest hole on the top washer.

I cannot vouch for any Banjos other than my own. The BBs are probably readily available at Bearing supply houses. The washers you can probably substitute something similar. Springs seem to be an odd type but you might find something through a spring supply house. The closest I have found are 1930's Indian Motorcycle clutch springs but they are a bit bigger dia.

I have a 1926 BB tone ring assembly in a new rim, it came with 24 balls, 24 springs, and 48 washers. I also have a 1925 BB all original tenor that also came with 24 balls, 24 springs, and 48 washers. If you need washers or balls that is relatively easy, springs not so easy.

The Ball Bearing banjo's were only made in 1925 and 1926 to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks to you both for the information and help. I think I can now make an informed decision on the BB I've got my eye on. I appreciate the suggestions and advice. Gill

Thanks, BanjoFlyboy. I saw the pictures on your Homepage, and that is a nice looker! I'm more or less looking for a Granada or Style 5. If you wouldn't mind, would you PM me what you paid? Thanks. Gill
